One of the best ways to combat negativity or negative thinking in your life, is to establish a gratitude practice. Below are four steps to starting this practice:

Step #1:

Start a gratitude journal. Find or purchase a small notebook in which you can write down at least 3 things each day for which you are thankful.

Step #2:

Be specific! Look for the little things. Being really specific will train your brain to look for the little joys in life. Instead of writing things like…my house, my spouse, my kids…challenge yourself to be very specific. Maybe you are thankful for a certain warm blanket, or the hug your spouse gave you before they left for work, or the help your child offered to do the chores.

Step #3:

Be consistent. My suggestion is to write in your journal at the same time every day. This will help to establish a habit. Perhaps its in the morning, or at lunch or before you go to bed. Attaching is to a practice you already have will ensure it sticks even more. So maybe you do it along with prayer, or a meal, or after you brush your teeth at night.

Step #4:

Look back at your journal. Not only is the practice of writing down things each day helpful in and of itself, but being able to look back at your journal in times of disappointment or distress can help give a fresh, joyful perspective!

Start a gratitude practice NOW

Think about three good things you can be thankful for today! A gratitude practice is also a proven way to help combat depression in anxiety! Don’t wait… The perfect time to start is now!
